There is a LIFT desk at every Family Court. There website also has a lot of helpful guides.
If your client has too high of income for accessing free legal services, you can try the lawyer referral service from the bar assocation of their borough or county. Usually one pays a small fee $35-$50 for a half hour consulation. The New York City Lawyer Referral Service can provide referrals for all boroughs.
For cases involving domestic violence, your client can walk in and receive services at the Family Justice Center in their borough.
Also worth checking out are clinics at local law schools. Every school is different but many will have a clinic covering most major areas of law.
